PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE
FORM OF PAST CONTINIOUS TENSE (YAPISI)
Past continuous tense’de I, he, she, it ile was; you, we, they ile were yardımcı fiilleri kullanılır ve fiil –ing eki alır.
OLUMLU: Subject + was/were + V-ing
I was giving a concert this time yesterday.
(Dün bu zamanda bir konser veriyordum)
It was snowing at that moment.
(O sırada kar yağıyordu)
Selma was washing her hair when the phone rang.
(Selma, telefon çaldığında saçını yıkıyordu)
The neighbours were having coffee at 8 o’clock yesterday evening.
(Komşular dün akşam 8’de kahve içiyorlardı)
We were talking to each other when the teacher entered the classroom.
(Öğretmen sınıfa girdiğinde birbirimizle konuşuyorduk)
NEGATIVE (OLUMSUZ): Subject + was/were + not + V-ing
I wasn’t listening to you at that time.
(O sırada seni dinlemiyordum)
They weren’t sleeping when the taxi arrived.
(Taksi geldiğinde uyumuyorlardı)
Merve wasn’t watching TV so she turned it off.
(Merve TV seyretmiyordu bu yüzden onu kapattı)
It wasn’t raining yesterday evening.
(Dün akşam yağmur yağmıyordu)
The children weren’t playing with the dog then.
(Çocuklar o zaman köpekle oynamıyorlardı)
SORU: was/were + subject + V-ing
A: Were you playing football when it started to rain? B: Yes, I was. / No, I wasn’t.
(Yağmur başladığında futbol oynuyor muydun?)
A: Were they watching the film then? B: Yes, they were. / No, they weren’t.
(O zaman filmi izliyorlar mıydı?)
A: Was your father working at the office? B: Yes, he was. /No, he wasn’t.
(Baban ofiste çalışıyor muydu?)
What were you doing at 8 o’clock? I was doing yoga.
(8’de ne yapıyordun? Yoga yapıyordum)
Where were they going when I saw them? They were going to the shopping centre.
(Onları gördüğümde nereye gidiyorlardı? Alışveriş merkezine gidiyorlardı)
What was she drinking at the cafe? She was drinking tea.
(Kafede ne içiyordu? Çay içiyordu)
What were you doing when I called you? We were listening to the singer.
(Sizi aradığımda ne yapıyordunuz?Şarkıcıyı dinliyorduk)
USE OF PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE (KULLANIMI):
1- Geçmiş bir zamanda devam eden eylemler:
We were watching TV at 9 o’clock last night.
(Dün gece 9’da televizyon seyrediyorduk)
Suzan was sleeping when I came home.
(Ben eve geldiğimde Suzan uyuyordu)
What were you doing this time yesterday?
(Dün bu zamanda ne yapıyordunuz?)
We were having a picnic in the forest this time yesterday.
(Bu zamanda ormanda piknik yapıyorduk)
2- Bir hikayede arka planda devam eden eylemler:
It was raining outside. Everybody was sitting in the room. Suddenly, the door opened and a man entered.
(Dışarda yağmur yağıyordu. Herkes odada oturuyordu.Birden kapı açıldı ve bir adam girdi)
PAST CONTINOUS TENSE TIME WORDS (ZAMAN KELİMELERİ):
at that time, then, at the time, this time yesterday, all night, at 6 o’clock, yesterday, from 3 to 5 yesterday; when, while, as, just as
Past continuous with when /while (when ve while ile past continuous kullanımı):
When + past simple, past continuous
We were having dinner when my father came.
(Babam geldiğinde akşam yemeği yiyorduk)
When I went out last night, it was raining outside. So I got wet.
(Dün dışarı çıktığımda, yağmur yağıyordu. Bu yüzden ıslandım)
When I opened my eyes, everybody was looking at me.
(Gözlerimi açtığımda herkes bana bakıyordu)
He was working at a cafe when I met John.
(John’la tanışdığımda o bir kafede çalışıyordu)
While + past continuous, past simple
While we were walking in the park, it started to rain.
(Parkta yürüyorken yağmur başladı)
John broke his leg while he was playing football .
(Futbol oynarken John bacağını kırdı)
John saw a kangaroo while he was driving to work.
(John işe araba sürerek giderken bir kanguru gördü)
Past continuous’un önünde while gibi as / just as kullanılabilir. Just as vurgulama sağlar. When Past continuous önünde when kullanılabilir fakat while daha yaygındır:
As I was watching TV, the door suddenly opened and a cat came in.
(Ben TV seyrederken birden kapı açıldı ve içeri bir kedi girdi)
She fell down just as she was crossing the street.
(Tam caddeyi geçerken yere düştü)
While /As + past continuous, past continuous (Paralel eylemler):
While the children were watching TV, their mum was reading a book.
(Çocuklar televizyon seyrederken anneleri kitap okuyordu)
Sue was cleaning the attic while Sally was cleaning the kitchen.
(Sue çatı katını temizlerken Sally mutfağı temizliyordu)
