1. a) Would, will’in geçmiş şekli olarak, geçmişteki gelecek eylemleri ifade edebilir.

 

I hoped you would come, why didn’t you?

(Geleceğini ümit etmiştim, neden gelmedin?)

 

I knew I would win the exam.

(Sınavı kazanacağımı biliyordum)

 

1. b) Farazi ifadelerde kullanılabilir. If ile yapılan şart cümlelerinde bu kullanım yaygındır.

 

If I had a bike, I would cycle to work.

(Bir bisikletim olsaydı, işe bisikletle giderdim)

 

If you were rich, what would you do?

(Zengin olsaydın ne yapardın?

 

If olmadan da would kullanılabilir. Mesela kibarca önerilere yanıt vermek için kullanılabilir.

 

“Do you want some money?” “It would be nice.”

(Biraz para ister misin? Hoş olurdu)

 

“Let’s go to the beach.” “Hmm. That would be lovely. Let’s.”

(Kumsala gidelim. Güzel olurdu. Haydi.)

 

1. c) Would, eskiden yaptığımız alışkanlıklar ve tekrarlı eylemler için kullanılabilir. Bu kullanımda durm bildiren fiillerle would be, would live gibi kullanılmaz.

 

When I lived in Bodrum, we would go swimming very often.

(Bodrumda yaşarken çok sık yüzmeye giderdik)

 

I was a funny student. I would make my friends laugh during classes.

(Ben eğlenceli bir öğrenciydim. Derslerde arkadaşlarımı güldürürdüm)

 

1. d) would like, would love, would prefer, would rather ifadeleriyle would kullanılır.

 

Would like (istemek) anlamında kullanılabilen kibar bir ifadedir

 

I would like an apple. Would you like an apple, too?

(Bir elma isterim Sen de elma ister misin?)

 

Would like ifadesinden sonra fiil kullanırsak, fiilden önce to kullanılır.

 

What would you like to do?

(Ne yapmak istersin?)

 

I’d like to watch TV.

(TV izlemek isterim)

 

We’d like to eat in that restaurant.

(Şu lokantada yemek isterim)

 

Would prefer ve would rather (tercih etmek) anlamında kullanılır. Would prefer ile fiil kullanırsak to-fiil, would rather ile yalın fiil kullanılır.

 

I would prefer to eat at home.

I would rather eat at home.

(Evde yemeyi tercih ederim)

 

Would prefer ile rather than, would rather ile than kullanılır.

 

I would prefer to eat at home rather than go to the restaurant.

I would rather eat at home than go to the restaurant.

(Lokantaya gitmektense evde yemeyi tercih ederim)

My father would prefer to read the news on the internet rather than watch the news on TV.

(Babam TVde haberleri izlemektense internette haber okumayı tercih eder)

(TV seyretmektense satranç oynamayı tercih ederim)

(Çay mı kahve mi tercih edersiniz?)
