Tercihlerimizi ifade ederken prefer fiilini kullanabiliriz.
I prefer tea.
(çayı tercih ederim)
I prefer tea to coffee.
(Çayı kahveye tercih ederim)
Prefer ile –ing form veya to –fiil kullanılabilir.
I prefer reading a book.
I prefer to read a book.
(Kitap okumayı tercih ederim)
Fakat prefer’den sonra –ing kullanırsak karşılaştırdığımız şeyden önce to; fakat prefer’den sonra to-fiil kullanırsak karşılaştırdığımız şeyden önce “rather than” kullanırız.
I prefer reading a book to watching TV.
I prefer to read a book rather than watch TV.
(TV seyretmeyi kitap okumaya tercih ederim)
Konuşma anındaki tercihler için would prefer to + fiil yapısı kullanılır.
would prefer + to + V + rather than + V
I would prefer to eat at home rather than go to the restaurant.
(Lokantaya gitmektense evde yemeyi tercih ederim)
I’d prefer to have fruit juice rather than (have) coffee.
(Kahve içmektense meyve suyu içmeyi tercih ederim)
Would rather (= would prefer to) neyi tercih ettiğimizi söylemek için kullanırız. Would prefer to ile aynı anlama gelir.
‘Shall we go out this evening?’ ‘I’d rather stay at home.’
(Bu akşam dışarı çıkalım mı? Evde kalmayı tercih ederim)
You can wait for the bus if you want. I’d rather take a taxi.
(İstersen sen otobüsü bekle. Ben taksi tutmayı tercih ederim)
Olumsuz ifade: would rather not ile yapılır.
I’d rather not go to the cinema this evening.
(Bu akşam sinemaya gitmemeyi tercih ederim)
Would rather yapısında bir şeyi neye tercih ettiğimizi belirtirken than kullanırız:
I’d rather go to the cinema than stay at home.
(Evde kalmaktansa sinemaya gitmeye tercih ederim)
I’d rather play football than (play) tennis.
(Tennis (oynamak) yerine futbol oynamayı tercih ederim)
Başka birisinin neyi yapmasını tercih ettiğimizi would rather + someone+ past simple ile ifade edebiliriz. Bu yapıda past simple kullanılır ama şimdi veya gelecekle ilgili tercih belirtir:
I’d rather you didn’t tell anyone about this.
(Bundan kimseye bahsetmemeni tercih ederim)
I’d rather you stayed at home with me.
(Evde benimle kalmanı tercih ederim)
Geçmiş hakkındaki tercihleri would rather + have V3 yapısıyla ifade edebiliriz:
I’d rather not have gone to the cinema last night. The film was awful.
(Dün gece sinamaya gitmemiş olmayı tercih ederim. Film berbattı)
I’d rather have bought that dress last week. It’s been sold now.
(Şu elbiseyi geçen hafta almış olmayı tercih ederim. Şimdi satılmış)
Başka birisinin geçmişte ne yapmış olmasını tercih ettiğimizi would rather + someone + had V3 ile ifade edebiliriz:
I’d rather my father hadn’t sold our car. It was in good condition.
(Babamın arabamızı satmamış olmasını tercih ederim. İyi durumdaydı).
