“Where” kelime anlamı olarak “Ne zaman” anlamına gelir ve relative clause’da yer belirten kelimelerden sonra kullanılır. Kelimenin muhakkak yer belirtmesi gerekir, bir şehrin veya ülkenin ismi bir cümlede geçiyor diye illa ki yer belirtmek zorunda değildir.

İzmir, where I live, is one of the most beautiful cities in Turkey.
Fatherland is a country where you don’t feel left out .

He is going to move to London, which is the capital city of England.
Yukarıda verilen son iki cümleye baktığımızda, relative clause oluştururken ilk cümleki “London”dan sonra “where”, ikinci cümledeki “London”dan sonra ise “which” kullanılmıştır.
“He is going to move to London where he is going to work” cümlesinde “London” yer belirtmektedir.
“He is going to move to London, which is the capital city of England” bu cümlede ise “London” her ne kadar bir şehir ismi olsa da, burada yer belirtmez.
Relative clause olan cümleleri, relative clause yapısından çıkarıp ayrı bir cümle yapalım;
“He is going to move to London where he is going to work” buradaki relative clause kısmını ayrı bir cümle yaptığımızda cümle şöyle olacaktır;
He is going to work in London. = He is going to work there.
“He is going to move to London, which is the capital city of England.” Buradaki relative clause kısmını ayrı bir cümle yaptığımızda ise cümle;
London is the capital city of England. = It is the capital city of England.
Aradaki fark bariz bir şekilde ortada; ilk cümlede, ya “London”dan önce yer edatı ya da “London” yerine “there” kullandık. Bu, bu cümledeki “London”ın yer bildirdiğini gösterir.
İkinci cümlede ise “London”dan önce yer edatı yoktur ya da “London” yerine “there” kullanılamaz. Öyleyse bu cümlede “London” yer belirten bir kelimeden ziyade cümlenin öznesi konumundadır ve relative clause oluştururken “where” kullanılamaz.
I will visit my aunt in İstanbul, which is my favorite city. (İstanbul is my favorite city = It is my favorite city.)
İstanbul is my favorite city, where my aunt lives. (My aunt lives in İstanbul = My aunt lives there.)
Are you going to travel to Andorra that isn’t known by many people. (Andorra isn’t known by many people = It isn’t known by many people)
One day I will move to Ankara, where I was born. (I was born in Ankara = I was born there)
One day I will move to Ankara, which is the capital city of Turkey (Ankara is the capital city of Turkey = It is the capital city of Turkey)
